Artist Statement Small, repetitive dot-like marks are the building blocks of my imagery. This approach to work is informed by memories and tendencies both cultural and personal. When I was a child growing up in Korea, I was surrounded by repetitions. From hand done design motifs of traditional crafts to my Buddhist grandmother's nightly prayer chants, I found comfort in predictability of systems, as well as delight in subtle variations and departure from these systems. Such experiences continue to have tremendous bearing on my work. I work exclusively in the printmaking medium of collagraphy. Tactile and direct, yet process oriented nature of this medium further extends and satisfies my pull towards ritualistic approach to work.
